Coffee filters may seem like an insignificant part of the coffee brewing process, but that is far from the truth. By understanding their different types, uses, and environmental impacts, we can make more informed choices when brewing our next cup of coffee.

Paper Filters

Paper filters are the most common and practical for coffee brewing. They come in various sizes and shapes, so there is a paper filter for almost all coffee makers and brewing methods. Paper filters from Chemex, for example, are 20-30% thicker than the paper filters we are generally used to, while Hario paper filters are perfectly suited for their iconic V60 pour-over brewer.

The advantages of paper filters include:

Flavor neutrality: Most paper filters do not add flavor to the coffee, allowing the coffee's natural aromas to shine through. This offers the opportunity to experiment with different types of coffee and brewing methods to achieve the desired flavor profile.

Effective filtration: Paper filters capture oils and fine sediments, resulting in a cleaner flavor profile.

Convenience: Paper filters are easy to use for coffee brewing. The filter with coffee grounds can be easily discarded in food waste after brewing.
When it comes to paper filters, the choice between bleached and unbleached filters is often a topic of discussion. Among coffee enthusiasts who prioritize taste, oxygen-bleached paper filters are often preferred.

Oxygen-bleached filters have undergone a bleaching process that uses oxygen instead of chlorine. Oxygen-bleached paper filters are generally considered more environmentally friendly than chlorine-bleached alternatives due to a reduced risk of toxic waste and less negative environmental impact, but oxygen-bleached filters still have some potential drawbacks, such as the use of more water and energy.

Metal Filters

Metal filters, often made of stainless steel, provide a completely different coffee experience than paper filters. Metal filters allow more oils and fine particles to pass through, resulting in a richer and fuller coffee flavor. Check out Hario metal filters, sizes 01 and 02.

Reusability: Metal filters can be reused, making them a more sustainable choice.

Cost-saving: You avoid regularly buying paper filters.

The disadvantage of metal filters is that they can result in a cloudier coffee, as the filters allow fine particles of the ground coffee to pass through.

Tip: Don't despair if the coffee is over-extracted; try adjusting the grinder to a coarser setting, as the small coffee particles can easily clog the filter. If your grinder cannot grind to a consistent grind size, it might be a good idea to use a Shimmy Sleeve from Fellow to remove the smallest particles.

Cloth Filters

Cloth filters are a good compromise between paper and metal. They are often made of organic cotton, linen, or nylon and can be reused multiple times. We have organic cotton cloth filters from CoffeeSock available for several brewing methods.

Sustainability: Like metal filters, cloth filters are reusable, meaning they generate less waste compared to paper filters.

Economical: By investing in a cloth filter that can last up to a year with proper maintenance, it will be more economically viable to use cloth filters than paper filters.

Flavor: Cloth filters capture some oils and particles but still allow more to pass through than a paper filter. This provides a good balance between clarity and body in the cup; the coffee should be ground slightly coarser than for paper filters to avoid an overly strong and bitter taste.

Disadvantages: However, cloth filters require regular cleaning after each use to prevent the accumulation of coffee grounds and oil residues. They also need to be hung up after use to dry properly before being put away. Cloth filters can be expected to have a lifespan of about a year; after this, the fibers in the fabric may break down, and the filter will be too worn to filter out particles and oils for optimal extraction.
